Blackwater Valley Friends of the Earth (BVFoE) initially identified locations on a Rushmoor Map as potential suitable green spaces for improvement. We then did site visits to most of the locations and, in doing that, discovered more green spaces. For most of the green spaces identified we have taken a photo with a post code. With the help of Rushmoor Voluntary Services and Rushmoor Borough Council we have established the ownership of some of the green spaces. Our reasons for identifying and mapping green spaces in the Borough are as follows:
- To protect green spaces from future development and / or neglect (vehicle parking, fly tipping, litter)
- To provide a community space.
- To enhance pride in local areas.
- To enhance biodiversity by creating / improving habitats and to identify a possible site for a ‘Tiny Forest’
- To improve air quality.
- Reduce the risk of flooding.
- To provide urban shade especially during heat waves, should trees be planted.
